GRAMBLING, LA. -- Southern (5-17, 4-3 Southland) scored three runs in the third and two in the seventh to pull away 5-2 from Grambling State (6-9, 3-3 SWAC) at the GSU Softball Complex on Monday afternoon.
GSU scored one run in the first and one run in the second to take the early 2-0 advantage.
In the top of the third inning
Cameron Andrews got the Lady Jaguars bats going with a single.
Mariyah Sandoval singled to left field advancing Andrews to second base.
Aubrion Alexis James RBI single to third base scored Andrews and advance Sandoval to second. Next batter
Roxsanna Segura tripled to right field for two RBI's scoring Sandoval and James as Southern took the 3-2 lead.
Southern responded again in the top of the seventh when
Hope Kruebee reached first by a pitching error and then was able to advance to second.
Lauren Parks doubled up the middle scoring Kruebee. Next batter
Andrews grounded out to the pitcher but was able to advance
Parks to third base.
Sandoval singled through the left side scoring Parks as the Lady Jaguars extended their lead 5-2 over the Lady Tigers.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, two GSU Lady Tigers struck out swinging and one flied out to center field as the Lady Jaguars would take game one of the three-game series.
Kaytlin Donaldson (4-6) picked up the win, allowing two runs off seven hits while facing 29 batters on the afternoon.
UP NEXT
Southern returns to action on Tuesday with a doubleheader against Grambling State. First pitch is set for 12:00 pm.
