GRAMBLING, LA. -- Southern (6-18, 5-4 SWAC) split Tuesday's doubleheader against conference foe Grambling State to secure the 2-1 series win at the GSU Softball Complex on Tuesday afternoon.
Southern 6, Grambling State 4
In the top of the first inning
Mariyah Sandoval singled to right field.
Kameri Mott reached first on an error by the pitcher advancing Sandoval to third base.
Aubrion Alexis James RBI single to third base scored Sandoval and advance Mott to second as Southern took the 1-0 lead.
Southern responded again in the top of the second when
Raquel Latta singled to get on first.
Hope Kruebee walked and Latta advanced to second. Next batter
Lauren Parks singled to left field loading the bases.
Cameron Andrews reached first on a short stop error as Latta scored making it 2-0.
GSU scored one run in the bottom of the third, trailing Southern 2-1.
Hope Kruebee singled to left field to start the top of the fourth for the Lady Jaguars.
Lauren Parks reached first on an error by the pitcher as Kruebee moved to third.
Cameron Andrews grounded out to second but was able to bring one run home to advance SU lead 3-1. However the Lady Tigers scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth to tie up the contest 3-3.
Southern took the lead 4-3 in the top of the fifth with a single from
Hope Kruebee to score James. The Lady Jaguars added two more runs in the top of the seventh to extend their lead 6-3.
in In the bottom of the seventh inning, two GSU Lady Tigers struck out swinging and one flied out to center field as the Lady Jaguars would take game one of the three-game series.
Aubrion Alexis James (3-8) picked up the win, allowing just five hits while she struck out five batters.
Southern 3, Grambling State 4 (9 Innings)
Southern opened the scoring in game two with one run in top of the first when Parks crossed the plate on Sandoval RBI.
Southern scored again in the top of the third when
Cameron Andrews sacrifice RBI scored Latta.
Mariyah Sandoval grounded out to second but was able to bring home
Lauren Parks as the Lady Jaguars took an early 3-0 lead.
The Lady Tigers got on the board in the bottom of the fourth and added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game 3-3.
In the bottom of the ninth inning GSU scored the final run as they took the second game of the doubleheader 4-3.
Kaytlin Donaldson (4-7) picked up the loss but pitched a complete game striking out three batters.
UP NEXT
Southern returns to action on Monday when they host University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. First pitch is set for 3:00 pm.
