THIBODAUX, LA. -- Nicholls State (8-13, 1-8 Southland) scored three runs in the third, one run in the fifth and two in the sixth to pull away 6-3 from Southern (4-17, 3-3 SWAC) at Swanner Field on Tuesday night.
SU started the game with a
Lauren Parks single and she advanced to second base when
Cameron Andrews reached first on a fielder's choice. Parks and Andrews were able to reach second and third on a wild pitch. The Lady Jaguars took the early 1-0 lead when Parks was brought home on the next at bat fly out to center field off
Mariyah Sandoval.
After a scoreless first, Southern found themselves tied after a home run from NSU's Gwiazda before the Lady Colonels scored two more runs taking a 3-1 lead.
Nicholls State extended their lead after another score in the bottom half of the fifth and two in the sixth for their final score of the evening.
Southern tried to respond In the top of the seventh when Parks was hit by a pitch advancing to first. Andrews reached first and second off a throwing error also advancing Parks to third. Sandoval single up the middle scored two runs for her third RBI of the game, but that wasn't enough as the Lady Jaguars would fall 6-3.
Annelise Corona (0-2) picked up the loss, allowing three runs off two hits while facing 11 batters on the night.
UP NEXT
Southern returns to action on Friday when they travel to Houston, Texas for a weekend series at Texas Southern. First pitch is set for 3:00 pm on Friday.
