Baton Rouge, LA- The Southern University softball team (0-8) took a hard loss in their game against the Panthers of Eastern Illinois (6-1) on Wednesday, coming up short 10-2 (7 innings).
After two previous matches against EIU on Monday, this would be the last game in their series against each other.
Through the first four innings SU remained scoreless on the board until the bottom of the fifth when the Lady Jaguars showed signs of life with a single fromÂ
Paytin Mercado and a sacrifice bunt fromÂ
Kalea Brown that advanced Mercado.
Lauren Parks pulled up with an RBI in hand to score Mercado to keep the game alive and force a sixth inning trailing the Panthers 8-1.Â
Â
Southern had a rough outing defensively after giving up seven runs through four innings. By the end of the seventh inning Eastern Illinois had scored 10 runs total. Although the game had been rough defensively, Southern had a few bright spots during the game. They were able to hold Eastern Illinois scoreless during the first two innings with excellent fielding.Â
Going into the sixth, the Panthers answered with another point in an effort to seal the game, but it wasn't enough as the Jaguars answered back with an RBI single from
Londyn Lau to score
Reese Graves. EUI scored again in the top of the seventh, taking the victory 10-2.
