MONROE, LA. -- Southern University Lady Jaguars dropped the season opener on Saturday afternoon to the University of Louisiana Monroe 3-0.
SU recorded its first shot of the season by
Brynn Hill with 06:51 into the first half. Kiara Armstrong recorded the Lady Jaguars second shot of the day at 36:51 of the first half. Southern trailed ULM 1-0 at the end of the first half. Defender Ashante' Gatlin led the Lady Jaguars with two shots on target, both came in the second half.
"Going into the game, we had the mind set of learning each other. Having to change the starting lineup multiple times before the first game is always tough. The past two weeks, due to injuries, we wondered if certain players could play; and if they could, for how long. I can probably say the lineup was changed 4 or 5 times this week. I believe the team played a great game, especially given all the obstacles we have faced prior to today. Junior Goalie Chioma Eriken and Junior Centerbacks Jalyn Davis and Miamour Mesa stepped up big for us today with the leadership we have been asking for from the back. Now, we will regroup and build from this.... Jaguar Strong", said Jeremy Fontenot, SU Head Soccer Coach.
Chioma Eriken finished the day with eight saves in 90 minutes of play.
ULM out shot SU 23-5 with 3 shots on goal for the Lady Warhawks.
SU recorded on yellow card at the 12:27 mark of the first half.
Janet Stopka led Lady Warhawks with five shots on target picking up two goals off them. McKenzie Rizqi added another five shots on target picking up one goal.
