Jaguars Fall Short in Season Opener Against Louisville

Louisville, KY—The Southern University Jaguars (0-1) drop a tough fought battle against the University of Louisville (1-0) by a score of 72-60 inside the KFC YUM! Center on Tuesday evening. 
 
"We played our hearts out but we ran out of gas and we ran out of bodies, said Head Coach Sean Woods. We started cramping and just couldn't sustain. I'm proud of our guys and the way they fought. For the first game, in this type of environment, we'll take this, and we'll learn from it, but I love the competitiveness. We need to clean up some things, but it's the first game. We're on the right track."

How It Happened
First Half
  • Terrell Williams scored the first points of the season for the Jaguars as they would be in a back-and-forth battle with the Cardinals for the entire first half. 
  • The Jaguars took their largest lead of the first half at the 7:26 mark on a three pointer by Williams assisted by P.J. Byrd.
  • There was a total of ten lead changes in the first half.
  • SU was 5-of-9 from behind the three-point line to open the game.
Second Half 
  • The Jaguars took over the lead early in the second half on a three-point basket by Brion Whitley which made the score 36-34. 
  • The Cardinals went on a 22-7 run heading into the under 8:00 media timeout.
  • Louisville was able to close out the Jaguars in route to a 72-60 victory. 

Top Performers
  • Whitley was the top scorer for the Jaguars with 17 points to go along with his two steals.
  • Tyrone Lyons had 11 points, four rebounds and one steal.
  • Floor General, Jayden Saddler finished with ten points, five rebounds, four assists and a steal.
  • Damien Sears opened the season with a huge night on the boards accounting for 14 rebounds.

  • The Jaguars return to Louisiana for a match-up against Tulane University on Saturday, November 13th. Tip-off set for 11:30 a.m.
