BATON ROUGE, LA--In the final match of the SWAC Cluster, Southern University (7-12, 6-7) went 3-0 against Mississippi Valley on Monday afternoon.
The Jaguars opened the game with a 25-16 lead in set one. Back-to-back kills by
Xaria Taylor early in the match gave the Jags an 8-4 lead while
Joilyn Azore also had back-to-back kills later in the set to push the lead 19-14. A bad set by MVSU closed out the match giving the SU the set with a final score of 25-16.
The second set was a close call as Mississippi Valley kept a tight handle on the Jags, but SU's bend but not break mentality wouldn't allow MVSU to take control of the set. They were able to gain their closest score of the game but were still not able to come back as they fell short 25-23 with the Jags taking set two.
In the third set Southern was able to dominate the Devilettes as they closed out the final set with a 25- 9 score.
Taylor,
Azore, and
Ravon Robertson led the game today all with 10 kills each. This game also marked a personal achievement for Senior right side,
Azore, as she got her career high in kills against her former team.
