Volleyball Falls in Four Sets to Arkansas – Pine Bluff

Pine Bluff, Ark. – The Southern University (2-7, 1-2) volleyball team fought hard against Arkansas – Pine Bluff (4-12, 2-0) Sunday evening but couldn't quite close out the sets and fall 3-1.

Southern jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first set. However, UAPB came back to take the lead at 9-5 and forced Coach Venessa Jacobs to take a time out. After the timeout, the Lady Jaguars couldn't find their footing and dropped the first set 25-15.

SU seemed to right the ship in the second set when they jumped out to a 6-2 lead behind the serving of freshman Kyla Carrier and Elise Doomes. The quick start made UAPB take a quick timeout. From there, things went back and forth until the Lions called another timeout with SU leading 23-21. UABP scored the final four points to take the second set.

The third set saw 16 ties and 5 different lead changes. Once again, Southern jumped out to a 10-6 lead and forced UAPB to take a time out. After the timeout UAPB came back and forced SU to take a timeout of their own, this time with the score 16-14 still in favor of the Lady Jags. From that point on both teams went back and forth with neither team scoring more than two points in a row. Both teams battled it out, but SU was able to pull of the win 32-30.

After the intense third set, SU couldn't seem to get anything going in the third set. This time UAPB jumped out in front and never looked back. SU was able to cut the lead to one on several occasions but a quick rally by UABP forced the Lady Jags to call a timeout. They started to make a run to close the gap, but UABP was able to shut the door when they scored the final seven points.

The Lady Jaguars were led offensively by Doomes who had 12 kills. She was followed by Nya Campbell with 8. Carrier had a season high in assists with 21. Ryleigh Taylor was second on the team in assists and digs with 11 each. Defensively, Kennedy Joubert had a season high with 24 digs to lead SU.
