Balanced Effort Puts The Jaguars Back in the Win Column

BATON ROUGE, LA—Kendall Dutton, Ravon Robertson and Elise Doomes combined for 37 kills as the Southern University Jaguars (4-10, 3-5) were able to get back in the win column following a 3-1 decision over Alcorn State University (2-18, 1-7) Thursday night.

Set one was a battle until Alcorn was able to take a 16-11 lead on a service ace. After a couple substitutions, SU was able to regain the lead behind kills from Dutton and Robertson pushing their lead to 22-18, forcing Alcorn to call a timeout. The Braves began to rally back and eventually took set one with both teams having to score extra points.

The Jaguars opened set two with a 5-1 lead and continued to push that lead to 8-3 before Alcorn was able to bounce back and close the lead down to 9-8. The Braves fought to regain the lead but was only able to tie at 19-19 before SU was able to pull off a 6-1 run to take the second set.

A couple of kills and a block by Nya Campbell helped spark a 6-2 lead to open set three. The Jaguars were able to roll from there before Alcorn was able to chip away and take a 11-10 lead. A kill by Joilyn Azore tied the game for the Jaguars and from there they regained the lead on an attack error by the Braves and the battle continued. Extra points were needed for this set as well, but a few service errors by the Braves and a couple of kills by Robertson helped push the Jaguars to eventually take set three.

Set four was dominated by the Jaguars, as there was only one lead change and SU was able to go on a 15-5 run to open the score to 18-8 after a kill by Doomes. A rare kill by Ryleigh Taylor later pushed the lead to 23-9. Alcorn only scored three more points from there as the Jaguars take set four 25-12.

Dutton had a total of 15 kills followed by Robertson with 12 and Doomes with ten. Trenity Lundy, Doomes and Kyla Carrier had 18, 13 and 10 digs, respectively while Taylor added to her season total assists finishing with 26.
