Southern suffers Heartbreaking Loss as time expires at Alabama State

MONTGOMERY, AL – Southern (3-6, 3-2 SWAC) suffers heartbreaking loss at Alabama State (2-5, 2-5 SWAC) 66-64 as time expires in regulation.  

Southern was led by junior Isaiah Rollins who finished with 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting. He is the seventh different Southern player to led the team in scoring on the season. Sophomore Damiree Burns added 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds. 

Southern opened the game with Harrison Henderson layup taking the 2-0 advantage, after trading baskets with ASU for the next couple minutes, SU went on 14-0 run capped off with Jayden Saddler mid-range jumper with 10:36 left to go in the first half giving SU the 20-5 lead. ASU came back with 12-5 run off Battle jumper with 5:35 remaining in the half. SU was able to take a 28-20 lead into halftime. 

In the second half the Jags opened up on a 4-0 run off Shivers and Lee jumpers, extending the SU lead to 12 points. The largest lead of the night for SU was 15 but, the Hornets kept chipping away at the Jags' lead and gained the 50-49 advantage with 8:16 to go on back-to-back 3-pointers by Tate and Stewart. It was their first lead since early in the first half. Southern's final lead of the game was 54-52 with 6:21 remaining off Rollins made free throws. SU was able to tie the game up three more times down the stretch but found themselves trailing 64-62 with :16 on the clock after Tate made layup. After a Jaguars timeout, Jayden Saddler drove down the right lane and laid the ball up off the glass as ASU was called for goaltending tying up the game 64-64 with 5.8 seconds to go. On the ensuing possession Tate attempted a three pointer from the left wing which was partially blocked by Burns but Strawbridge was able to recover the loose ball rebound and made the game winning layup as time expired. 

Southern shot 45.1% from the field (23-51), 25% from behind the arc (3-12) and shot 62.5% from the free throw line (15-24) while State was 35.6% from the floor and 36.8% from behind the three point line. SU bench outscored the Hornets 43-29

Kenny Strawbridge led the Hornets with 16 points and 14 rebounds, LaTrell Tate had 14 points, Kevion Stewart finished with 12 points and Jordan O'Neal finished with 10.

The Jaguars will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 30 when they travel to Alcorn State for a 3:30 pm tip-off in Lorman.
