Southern Athletics Continues to Raise the Bar Academically

Baton Rouge, LA — Southern University Athletics recognized 223 student-athletes who earned at or above a 3.0 grade-point average (GPA), 35 student-athletes who achieved perfect 4.0 grade-point average for the Fall 2020 semester, and 22 student-athletes who received diplomas at the conclusion of the Fall 2020 semester. 

SU posted impressive Dean's list GPA's in football (57 student-athletes), baseball (30), women's track & field (24) soccer (20), softball (20), cheer (15) men's basketball (14), men's track & field (13), volleyball (11), women's basketball (10), women's tennis (7),  and bowling (6).

More than half of football's 105-man roster logged a 3.0 GPA or better this fall, while women's tennis placed 100 percent of its' roster on the list; men's basketball, baseball, soccer, softball, bowling, volleyball, softball placed 90 percent;  women's basketball, men and women's track & field at 70 percent; women's basketball and men's track & field placed 60 percent respectively. Of the 350 student-athletes, 234 (67 percent) achieved a 3.0 GPA this fall. The cumulative departmental GPA of all student-athletes was a 3.18, setting a mark as the highest in recorded history.  

"I am incredibly proud of our student-athletes, coaches, and our academic team," said Deputy Athletic Director/COO Dr. Trayvean Scott. I especially want to thank (Associate Athletic Director for Student-Services) Karmen King, (Director of Athletics Academics) A'jennae Dillon, (Director of Basketball Academics) Ventric Fletcher, (Associate Director of Academics/Student-Athlete Development) Denzel Lewis, (Assistant Director of Academics) Savanna Smith and (Compliance Coordinator) Alanna Plummer for their hard work in assisting our student-athletes post such outstanding GPAs.  This was an incredibly challenging semester for everyone, so the classroom performance by our student-athletes is to be commended."

Student-Athletes who posted perfect GPA's include: Volleyball's Brooke Jefferson Princess Stark; Women's Track & Field's Karanay Alexander, K'Yana Jackson, Destiny Mitchell, and Jazmine Young; Women's Tennis' Takalani Molaoa, Mackenzi Stewart, and Sasha Taruberekera; Softball's Destiny Hernandez, Paytin Mercado, Kameri Mott, Lauren Parks, Adriana Rincon, Cheer's Jayla Bumbry, and Cierra Jackson; Soccer's Raven Bradley and Chioma Eriken; Bowling's Morgan Zachmeyer; Women's Basketball's Caitlin Davis, Chloe Fleming, Amani McWain, and Rayven Patin; Baseball student-athletes Markaylon Boyd, Brendon Davis, Anthony Fidanza, Dillen Miller and Donovan Thompson; Men's Track and Field's Heisman Woods; Men's Basketball's James Edwards and Damiree Burns; And Football's Cesar Barajas, Martell Fontenot, Brian Jordan, Jr., Cameron Mackey, Kyle McGregor, and Shontega Thomas. 

Additionally, 25 student-athletes received Baccalaureate degrees during the Fall commencement exercises highlighted by Women's Tennis Student-Athlete Stephanie Mbaya who was honored as a Magna Cum Laude graduate for the School of Nursing & Allied Health.
 
"Once again in the face of a pandemic, our student-athletes showed outstanding resolve as we set records for academic excellence for Southern Athletics," said Athletic Director Roman Banks.  "Our students have persevered through many challenges and performed at high levels in their classes.  A tremendous factor in that success is Dr. Scott and our staff at the Academic Center for Student-Athletes, as they have worked tirelessly to create a level of normalcy during these unprecedented times.  The Student Services staff, coaches, and student-athletes are to be commended for their unwavering commitment to academic excellence.

Fall 2020 Highlights

Baseball
3.0 team GPA. 30 baseball student-athletes made Dean's list with 17 making the Athletic Director's Honor Roll.  Five student-athletes also achieved 4.0 GPAs. 

Bowling
3.3 team GPA. 90% the roster made Dean's list honor roll, with three making the Athletic Director's Honor Roll. One student-athlete also achieved a 4.0 GPA.

Football
53 of the 105-man roster earned a 3.00 or higher, with 24 football student-athletes making the Athletic Director's Honor Roll.  Six student-athletes posted perfect 4.0 GPAs for the Fall 2020 semester. 

Men's Track & Field
Five student-athletes made the Dean's list.  While Heisman Woods posted a perfect 4.0 GPA for the Fall 2020 semester.  

Soccer
3.20 team GPA. 90% made the Dean's list Honor Roll or above with Raven Bradley and Chioma Eriken reporting 4.0 GPAs. 

Tennis
3.6 team GPA.  14h consecutive semester above 3.0; 100% made the Dean's list Honor Roll or above led by Takalani Molaoa, Mackenzi Stewart, and Sasha Taruberekera who posted a perfect 4.0 GPA for the Fall 2020 semester.  

Volleyball
3.25 team GPA. 10th consecutive semester above 3.0; 90% on Dean's list, with five volleyball student-athletes making the Athletic Director's Honor Roll led by Brooke Jefferson and Princess Stark who posted perfect 4.0 GPAs.
