BIRMINGHAM, AL – Sophomore Damiree Burns had his first career double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Jaguars but that wasn't enough as Southern was defeated on the road at UAB 88-46 at Bartown Arena on Wednesday night.
Ahsante Shivers, Terrell Williams Jr., Jamarcus Jones and Samkelo Cele contributed five points. Southern (0-4) was led by Burns in assist with three. Harrison Henderson finished with season-high five rebounds.
UAB (7-0) was led by Sophomore guard Jalen Benjamin who finished with 15 points.
SU started the game trading baskets back and forth with the Blazers and took their only lead with Burns layup 4-2, with 17:38 left to play in the first half. Brendon Brooks made free throw at the 13:18 mark tied the game up at 10 all. UAB went on two 10-0 runs before the half. The Jags headed into the locker room trailing, 51-20. SU shot 30 percent for the game (19-for-63) and 10 percent from three-point range (2-21). The Jaguars shot 60 percent form free throw line (6-10) and out rebounded the Blazers 10-6 on the offensive end.
