IOWA CITY, IOWA. – The Southern University men's basketball team opens the 2020-21 season Thursday afternoon at 4 p.m. central time when they take on North Carolina Central at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City. Followed by a quick 24 hour turnaround when they face #5 ranked Iowa on Friday, Nov. 27 at 4 p.m. on the Big Ten Network.

Thursday marks the beginning of a six-game road trip for SU as they take on defending MEAC Champion North Carolina Central (18-13, 13-3) for the sixth series meeting between the Jaguars and Eagles. NCCU was picked to finish first in the Southern Division in the Preseason MEAC Poll. They return First Team Senior guard C.J. Keyser who averaged 11.6 points and Second Team Senior point guard Jordan Perkins who averaged 6.5 points and and 5.0 assists per game.
SU will face #5 Iowa (20-11, 11-9) on Friday. Iowa enters the 2020-21 season ranked fifth in the nation in the Associated Press poll after a strong campaign last season. The Hawkeyes ended the 2019-20 year ranked 25th in the nation, and senior forward Luka Garza was named Big Ten Player of the Year after averaging 23.9 points and 9.8 rebounds per contest. Returning for Iowa is pre-season All-Big Ten Junior Guard/Forward Joe Wieskamp, who averaged 14.0 points and 6.1 rebounds per contest and pre-season Big Ten player of the year Luke Garza.Â
The Jaguars finished the 2019-20 season as one of the hottest teams in the country, winning eight straight games and 14 of their last 16 games, finishing second in the regular season. It has been 261 days since the Jaguars were last on the hardwood, when they defeated Alabama State 67-53 in the first round of the Southwestern Athletic Conference Quarterfinal matchup in Baton Rouge, LA.Â
SU is led by returning guards
Ahsante Shivers (6-4, 210, G) andÂ
Micah Bradford (6-1, 170, G) who were both named pre-season Second Team All-SWAC. Shivers averaged 9.3 points and 3.9 rebounds per game last year and Bradford contributed 8.8 points and 3.4 assists per contest. The Jags will also look for SeniorÂ
Lamarcus Lee (6-2, 185, G) and SophomoreÂ
Damiree Burns (6-7, 210, F) to help contribute. Burns averaged 8.7 points and 4.7 rebounds while Lee averaged 7.2 points and 4.1 rebounds.Â
