HOUSTON -- Despite having five players score in double figures, Southern University labored through a cold shooting night to open Southwestern Athletic Conference play on a sour note in a 88-66 loss to Texas Southern on Saturday night.
Texas Southern limited the Jaguars to 36 percent from the field, including shooting 11 for 33 in the first half as the Tigers built a 36-28 lead. Senior guard Adrian Rodgers led all Jaguars with 14 points and four rebounds. Jared Sam finished with 12 points and a team high seven rebounds while Trelun Banks had 11. Tony Nunn and Chris Thomas added 10 each.
Texas Southern's Chris Thomas led all scorers with a game high 25 points and ten boards as the Tiger matched the Jaguars with five players in double figures. David Blanks recorded the league's first triple-double this season finishing with 11 points, 16 assists and 10 rebounds. Jose Rodriguez added 18 points on 3 of 6 shooting from behind the arc, while Orlando Coleman had 12 points and Derrick Griffin finished with 11 points.
"We didn't match their intensity in the second half tonight," said head coach Roman Banks.
"Coming in tonight, [Texas Southern] were much more ready to play than we were. They are the defending SWAC Champions and they were determined to be ready."
Southern wraps up its Texas road swing when the Jaguars meet the Prairie View A&M Panthers in Prairie View, Texas at 7:30 p.m.
