Southern University waisted little time in dispatching Grambling 3-0 (25-10, 25-15, 25-17) during Wednesday night's SWAC Western Division matchup in Cliford Seymour Gym.
With both teams sporting pink ensembles in support of Breast Cancer Awareness month, Southern (5-14, 2-1) jumped out to a 25-10 win in Set 1 using a 8-0 run to close out the Lady Tigers with the score at 17-10. In set 2, the Lady Jaguars overcame an early 6-2 deficit using a 6-0 run and a 7-0 run to finish off Grambling 25-15.
In the third and final set, Southern commited only one attack error and bolstered a .438 attack percentage in route to the 25-17 match-clinching victory.
“Tonight, we had about an 85 percent free ball kill rate. Anytime an opponent sends a free ball over, we need to convert that into a kill immediately,” said head coach Vanessa Jacobs. “Without looking at the stats, I would say we were right at 95 percent tonight. That makes me feel good going into next week.”
“When we step back and power the ball, good things happen for us,” said Jacobs. “Tonight we were able to serve with confidence as well.”
Southern continued to receive stellar play from freshman and Cedar Hills, Texas native Phalen Clark, who posted game highs in kills (12) and assists (20). Senior Simone Beasley and Michelle Willliams added eight digs each to anchor a SU defense that forced Grambling into a .000 attack percentage.
“Grambling is always a big game because of the rivalry,” says Phalan Clark. ” Coming out and winning in three gets us helps motivate us for next week.”
Southern will have the next couple of days of before venturing to Texas to face Texas Southern and Prairie View on consecutive days starting Oct. 22.
