SOUTHERN MEN CLOSE OUT REGULAR SEASON WITH LOSS AT PRAIRIE VIEW

Prairie View's Michael Griffin scored 21 points to lead the Panthers past the Southern University Jaguars, 72-57 on Saturday night in the final game of the regular season for both teams.

The Jaguars lost their 11th straight game in their finale, and ended the worst season in Southern men's basketball history. Southern finished the season 4-16 overall and 3-15 in SWAC play.

The Jaguars shot 42 percent for the game, but got out-rebounded 47-35 -- including 20-7 on the offensive ends -- and turned the ball over 14 times.

Southern did lead by as many as eight points with 7:07 left in the first half and held a 34-33 lead at halftime.

The Panthers shot 40.8 percent from the field and took a 47-35 rebounding advantage with the help of Duwan Kornegay, who finished with nine points and a game-high 15 rebounds. The determined Panthers outscored SU 39-23 in the second half in route to the win.

Brandon White led the Jaguars with 14 points while Blake Sanford added 11.

Tim Meadows chipped in with 13 points for Prairie View.

Southern U. did not qualify for the conference tournament for the second consecutive season.
