PINE BLUFF, Ark. -- Southern University fell behind early, and was unable to mount a comeback, as Arkansas-pine Bluff's Allen Smith scored 21 points, making five 3-pointers, and the Golden Lions defeated the Jaguars 64-51 on Saturday night in Pine Bluff, Ark.

Southern fell behind early and 10 first half turnovers saw the Jags trail 37-28 at the half. USPA converted 12 points off of those turnovers and outscored Southern U. 16 to right in the paint.

Blake Sanford led Southern (4-20, 3-9) with 18 points. Julius Ingram and Lloyd Hickinson added nine points each. The Jaguars made 6 of 15 3-point tries, three each by Sanford and Hickinson, for 40 percent -- better than the team's overall shooting percentage of 38 percent. Hickinson was seeing his first action of the season after suffering a knee injury in preseason.

The Golden Lions (5-19, 5-7 SWAC) made 10 of their 19 3-point attempts, or 53 percent, and shot 56 percent overall from the field.

Daniel Broughton scored 12 points and Terrell Kennedy 10 for Arkansas-Pine Bluff, which made 56 percent from the field overall.

Southern will face the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils at 8:00 pm on Monday night in Itta Bena, Miss.
