Texas Southern's Arvell Nelson threw three touchdown passes Saturday night and the Tigers defeated Southern University 54-7 at AW Mumford Stadium.
The loss drops the Jaguars to 2-7 overall and 1-6 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. This was Southern's worst loss to anybody since 1999, when Florida A&M beats Southern U., 65-18 in Tallahassee, FL. It was SU's worst loss to Texas Southern in the history of the series, which dates back to 1946.
Southern, facing the conference's top-ranked defense, was held to 134 total yards, its second-worst effort of the season since another debilitating loss — 31-7 to Arkansas-Monticello on Sept. 11 (held to 117 yards).
Dray Joseph hooked up with Isiah Nelson for a 30-yard touchdown in the first quarter for Southern before TSU rolled up 47 unanswered points.
TSU's Nelson went 8 for 18 for 244 yards, including a 95-yard touchdown pass play to Kirk Fitzhugh that broke a 7-7 tie with 7:48 to play in the first quarter.
The Tigers (6-3, 6-1 Southwestern Athletic Conference) piled up 499 total yards, splitting the total between passing (250) and running (249). Marcus Wright rushed for 103 yards and a touchdown, and Martin Gilbert added 100 yards rushing.
Southern U. (2-7, 1-6), which has lost four in a row, was held to 134 yards total offense. Joseph Dray completed 10 of 33 passes for 88 yards and a touchdown. Brandon Rice rushed for 37 yards on seven carries.
Southern punter, Joshua Duran, had a busy night punting 12 times for a 42.9 yard average, including a long of 58 yards, and dropping two punts inside of the 20 yard line.
Defensively, Anthony Wells had seven tackles, while Gary Chatman and John White had six tackles each. Steven Williams and Virgil Williams each chipped in five tackles.
Southern will srap up the home portion of their schedule next week, when they host the Alabama State Hornets at 5:30pm in AW Mumford Stadium. Southern will parent's and relatives for Senior Day, on the bluff.
