Chris Davis scored 14 points and the Southern Jaguars hit enough free throws down the stretch to hold off Mississippi Valley State 57-54 in front of a "live" ESPNU audience.
The win moved Jags to 3-15 overall and 3-3 Southwestern Athletic Conference play. The win also gives SU its first winning streak of the season, with two wins in-a-row.
Southern made 14 of 22 free throws in the game, but none more important than the 6 of 10 free throws made in the final 44 seconds to seal the win.
Southern, which led by as many as 13 points in the first half and 31-21 at the break, held a 56-51 advantage with 23 seconds left after two Steffon Wiley free throws.
Vally State's Julius Cheeks hit a 3-pointer to pull within two points at 56-54 with 17 seconds remaining. After SU's Barry Honore' made the front end of a one-and-one, Cheeks missed a 3-point attempt with 9 seconds on the clock.
Dwayne Harmason led MVSU with 16 points and Eric Petty had 13 and six rebounds. Shannon Behling pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds.
Steffon Wiley had eight points, nine rebounds and three assists. Douglas Scott added eight points and eight rebounds.
Southern will hit the road next weekend, embarking on the tough Alabama swing facing SWAC leading Alabama State on Saturday and Alabama A&M on Monday night.
