SEVEN JAGUARS EARN ALL-SWAC FOOTBALL HONORS

Seven Southern Jaguar football players earned 2008 All-Southwestern Athletic Conference honors on the league's all-star team announced Tuesday afternoon.

Headlining the group of Jaguar stalwarts is the first-team quartet of quarterback Juamorris Stewart, offensive lineman Demarcus Stewart and defensive end, Vincent Lands.

· Bryant Lee, a 6-2, 195-pound redshirt-junior from Boutte, Louisiana (Hahnville HS) had another successful season, despite his finish and the team's finish to the 2008 season. Lee passed for 2,682 yards with 20 touchdowns and only seven interceptions. He completed 217 of 352 pass attempts. Lee also led SU in rushing with 534 yards on 139 carries with a team-high six touchdowns. He moved into second on SU all-time passing list with 5,579 yards, passing Nathaniel Harrison (1987-91; 5,440 passing yards). Lee was named Athlon Sports 2008 Preseason Offensive Player of the Year; Preseason SWAC Offensive Player of the Year; 3-time SWAC Offensive Player of the Week; 4-Time LSWA Offensive Player of the Week and Sports Network National Offensive Player of the Week.

Juamorris Stewart, a 6-3, 195-pound junior from Baton Rouge, Louisiana (Istrouma HS) was the only unanimous selection to the 2008 SWAC All-Conference team. Stewart finished the 2008 season with 76 catches for 11385 yards and 12 scores. Stewart led the SWAC in receptions per game (3.9) as well as receiving yards per game with 103.5 yards/game. He ranked seventh in FCS in receiving yards per game, as well as receptions per game. "J-Stew" finished tied for the SWAC lead with 12 touchdowns. His 2008 season was the best season for an SU receiver since Michael Hayes set single-season school records with 90 receptions for 1,328 yards and 15 touchdowns in 2000. Since then, only three receivers had broken the 800-yard barrier. They were Hayes (873 yards in 2002), Chris Davis (897 yards in 2003) and Alfred Ard (863 yards in 2003). Stewart was a preseason 2nd team All-SWAC pick.

· Demarcus Stewart, a 6-3, 315-pound senior offensive lineman from Plaquemine, Louisiana (Plaquemine HS), was one of the anchors for an offensive line that fronted the league's top passing offense (271 yards per game), while paving the way for one of the more dominant units, which chewed up nearly 415 yards per game (tops in SWAC). Stewart played several positions on the offensive line over the season, from both guard positions to center.

· Vincent Lands, a 6-1, 250-pound senior from Baton Rouge, Louisiana (Glen Oaks HS), was a team captain and unparalleled leader of the SU Dog Day Defensive unit. Lands was the third leading tackler on the team in 2008, recording 70 total tackles (39 solo) to go along with 21 tackles for loss yards (t-7th in NCAA FCS). He led the team and finished tied for seventh in the SWAC in sacks with six. Lands was a preseason 1st team All-SWAC selection, as well as earning SWAC Defensive Player of the once and the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Defensive Player of the Week twice.

Rafael Louis, linebacker Johnathan Malveaux and defensive back Glenn Bell.

· Rafael Louis, a 6-3, 355-pound redshirt junior from Miami, Florida (Pace HS), was another of the anchors for an offensive line that fronted the league's top passing offense (271 yards per game), while paving the way for one of the more dominant units, which chewed up nearly 415 yards per game (tops in SWAC).

· Johnathan Malveaux, a 6-0, 245-pound tackling machine from Baton Rouge, Louisiana (Belaire HS), was the Jags leading tackler in 2008, finishing the season with 94 tackles (33 solo), to go along with 10 tackles for loss yards. His tackle total fifth in the SWAC. His three interceptions were third on the team. Malveaux was a preseason 2nd team All-SWAC selection, and was named the defensive MVP in the 2008 Gulf Coast Classic.

· Glenn Bell, a 5-9, 185-pound senior strong safety from New Orleans, Louisiana (GW Carver HS), finished second on the team and 11th in the SWAC with 82 total tackles (51 solo). Bell also tied for third on the team with three sacks. He also tied for third on the team in interceptions with two, and had two forced and two recovered fumbles on the season, to go along with one blocked kick. Bell was a 2008 preseason 2nd team All-SWAC selection.
