Final Stats

Michael Clark scored 19 points and Larry Cox had 16 points and 17 rebounds as Mississippi Valley State beat Southern 61-58 on Monday night.

The Delta Devils (5-11, 3-2 SWAC) earned a 28-21 halftime lead and held on in the second half to win a game in which both MVSU and Southern (6-11, 4-2 SWAC) struggled to score.

The Jaguars shot 34.6 percent from the floor and the Delta Devils hit 35.3 percent of their shots. Southern also missed 14 free throws, including 10 in the second half, and squandered a chance to come back in the second half after hitting just 53.3 percent of its foul shots.

SU missed seven free throws in the final 4:21.

The Delta Devils also outrebounded Southern 49-30, including 17 offensive rebounds.

Steffon Wiley scored 14 for Southern and Chris Davis added 13.

"You have to credit that to Mississippi Valley's pressure," Spivery said. "I thought they pressured us, took some things away from us and we did not play with enough poise to take advantage of some things. And in spite of that, we still had a chance."

SU had a three-game winning streak halted, will now have a three-game homestand, starting Saturday when they host Alabama A&M at 4:00 pm. SU will then host SWAC leading Alabama State on Monday night, Janaury 28, at 8:02 pm, on ESPNU.
