Final Stats
Southern's Jazz Williams hit 6 of 9 three pointers on the
night as his career high 20 points led SU to a 70-60 win over Arkansas-Pine
Bluff on Saturday night at H.O. Clemmons Arena on the UAPB campus.
The win puts Southern in a tie for the SWAC lead with Alabama
State, who is also 4-1 in SWAC play.
Few fouls were called on the Jaguars, so UAPB only had 5 chances
at the foul line and sank 3 of those shots. Southern went to the line 23 times
and made 16. Chris Davis was 4-for-5 from the foul line and finished with 10
points.
Southern (6-10,4-1 SWAC) led 42-30 at the half.
UA-Pine Bluff would not go away easy at home, as the Golden
Lions ripped off a 19-3 run to take a 55-54 lead on Larry Williams' shot
with 6:36 left. But SU's Geri Guillory had seven of his eight points final six
minutes.
Guillory double-clutched from the right wing, to get the shot
over an onrushing, taller defender, to give SU the lead for good at 57-55 on
a 3-pointer with 5:53 left.
"The defense during that time was very good, and we rebounded
the ball very well. I knew that, from that point, it was just a matter of us
making free throws," Spivery said. "We made some plays at the right
time. I'm glad to see the guys respond like they did."
Dating from the end of last season, SU is 8-1 in its last nine
SWAC regular-season games.
Southern outrebounded UAPB (6-9,2-2 SWAC) 36-24, with the Golden
Lions getting just one rebound, on defense, in the final five minutes.
William Byrd, the SWAC's preseason player of the year,
led UAPB with 20 points, with Larry Williams adding 11 points and five assists
and George Davis 10 points.
