Final Stats
The Southern
Jaguars notched a huge win, knocking off preseason Southwestern Athletic Conference
favorite Jackson State, 85-69, at the Mini-dome on Monday night.
The Jackson
State's sprinter's start didn't last as an SU matchup zone slowed Jackson
State's transition offense and the Jaguars (5-10, 3-1 SWAC) answered with runs
of 8-0, 10-0 and 9-0 to take a 42-33 lead into halftime after Steffon Wiley
banked in a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from the top of the key. The Jaguars outscored
the Tigers 36-18 after nearly a 6-minute drought early in the ballgame.
Chris Davis
led SU with 17 points, while Jazz Williams connected for a career-high 16 points,
while Julius Ingram added 10 points and a team-high six rebounds.
Junior guard
Darrion Griffin scored 24 points and sophomore forward Grant Maxey had 18 points,
seven rebounds and three steals, and sophomore forward Garrison Johnson added
another 12 points, all in the second half.
SU outrebounded
Jackson State 37-28 and held the SWAC's top-scoring offense, averaging
84.3 ppg and 58.3-percent shooting in conference play, in check.
Ten of the
11 Jaguars who played also scored. And the Jaguars bench outscored Jackson State
45-4.
