SU FORCES FIVE SECOND HALF TURNOVERS IN 41-34 COMEBACK WIN OVER TENNESSEE STATE

Southern University's Bryant Lee passed for a career high 305 yards and a career high four touchdowns and the SU "Dog Day D" forced five second half turnovers, as the Jaguars overcame a 27-6 deficit to beat Tennessee State 41-34 Saturday night and remain undefeated.

Antonio Heffner, who finished with 316 yards passing and four touchdowns, got Tennessee State (2-2) off to a fast start with a 1-yard run for the game's first touchdown and a 61-yard pass to Brandon Belvin for the second with 9:13 left in the first quarter, to put Tennesse State up 13-0 early inthe first quarter.

Bryant, who was 23-of-33 for Southern (4-0), hit RoShon Jacobs with a 13-yard scoring pass to make the score 13-6.

Tennessee State would try to make this a blowout early, as they got the next two touchdowns, on a 49-yard run by Javarris Williams (14 carries, 107 yards) and a 4-yard pass from Heffner, who was 13-of-26 with two interceptions, to Chris Johnson. Eric Benson made both kicks, for a 27-6 lead.

Then Darren Coates, who also had 115 yards and two touchdowns rushing, caught a 31-yard pass for his first score of the night. The first of his two 1-yard touchdowns made the halftime score 27-19.

Suspended for the first half, SU Gerard Landry quickly made his presence felt when he hit the field in the third quarter, when Bryant hit Landry with a 6-yard pass for a score, and Coates got his third touchdown of the night, to put the Jaguars ahead 32-27 with 2:41 left in the third quarter. Heffner hit Ronald Evans with a 38-yard pass to put Tennessee State ahead again, 34-32 with 1:48 left.

Not to be outdone, Bryant hit Del Roberts with the 48-yard scoring pass, his fourth passing TD of the night, to go ahead again, 38-32. Josh Duran had a 31-yard field goal to end the scoring.

Robert led the Jags in receptions with six for a career high 110 yards. Mark Henderson had five catches for 55 yards.

Defensively for the Jags, sophomore linebacker, Gary Chapman, had a career high 11 tackles, one and half tackles for loss, a forced fumble and one sack. Cornerback Michael Williams had eight tackles, as did defensive tackle Dwayne Charles, who also had one fumble recovery and one sack, to go with his eight tackles. Defensive end, Vincent Lands added to his season total in sacks, as he collected two on the night to give him a team high five on the year. Free safety, Jarmaul George had an interception, as did cornerback, Joe Manning.

Gary Chapman laed the Jags defensiv efforts with a career high 11 tackles, one and half tackles for loss, a forced fumble and one sack.


Southern will travel to Mobile, Alabama next week, to take on the undefeated Alabama State Hornets, in the Gulf Coast Classic, at 2:30 pm. The game will also be televised on ESPNU.
