BATON ROUGE, LA -- Southern University's Bryant Lee passed for 144 yards and a touchdown and Nick Benjamin connected on his only pass of the evening for another as Southern beat Prairie View A&M 12-2, to remain undefeated Saturday night at AW Mumford Stadium.

The first half was a sheer defensive battle, as both teams combined for eight punts, and SU picked off PVAM quarterback Chris Gibson twice.

SU's Bryant Lee got the Jags on the board a 15-yard touchdown pass to Gerard Landry with 59 seconds left in the second quarter. Southern's other score came at the beginning of the fourth quarter as holder, Nicholas Benjamin, hit tight end Evan Alexander on a 12-yard pass-fake field goal.

The Jaguars (3-0, 2-0 SWAC) also gave Prairie View A&M (2-1, 1-1 SWAC) its only score, when Southern was charged with a fourth-quarter holding penalty in its own end zone, giving the Panthers their only points.

Kendrick Smith rushed 10 times for 40 yards to lead the Southern rushing attack. Bryant Lee finished the night 22 of 36 in passing for 144 yards. He also hit Gerard Landry with a second quarter 15 yard touchdown pass.

Calvin Harris led all rushes with 69 yards on 18 carries for Prairie View. Mark Spivey was 11-18-1 for 76 yards, and Chris Gibson was 11-26-2 for 69.

Vincent Lands finishied with eight tackles, four and a half tackles for losses, three sacks and a quarterback hurry.


Defensively, Johnathan Malveaux led Southern with 10 tackles, including two for losses. He also had two pass deflections, one sack and a quarterback hurry. Jarmaul George had nine tackles including one for a loss to go along with one interception. Defensive end, Vincent Lands, had a monster game, finishing with eight tackles, four and a half tackles for losses, three sacks and a quarterback hurry.

For Prairie View, Zach East had a game-high 15 tackles , one forced fumble and one sack. Gary hicks had 10 tackles and Val Ford had nine tackles, one and a half tackles for loss, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.
