May 8, 2006
Forty student-athletes were named to the 2006 SWAC Track and
Field All-Academic Team. The All-Academic Team consists of the 20 men and 20
women with the top grade point averages. Nominees must have at least a sophomore
standing and be eligible for competition. Jackson State University athletes
received the top honors for both the men's and women's teams. Senior
Lorin Washington posted the top GPA for the women with a 3.88 and Junior Raphael
Ngunta led the list with a 4.0 GPA. Honorable mentions include all track and
field competitors with at least a sophomore standing with a 3.0 GPA or higher.
Distance runners take the top track honors for the male and
female superlative awards. Jewell Wells of Alabama State was named Women's
Outstanding Track Performer. Wells contributed 28 points with a second place
finish in the 3000 Meter Steeplechase and championships in both the 5000 Meter
Run and 10,000 Meter Run. On the men's side, Kerone Fairweather of Grambling
State was the Men's Outstanding Track Performer with 36 points. Fairweather
won both the 300 meter steeplechase and the 10,000 meter run while placing second
in the 1500 meter run and 5000 meter run.
Southern's Monica Robinson was named Women's Outstanding
Field Performer of the meet with a championship in the long jump and respectable
place finishes in the triple jump, high jump, and pole vault. Robinson's
point total for the meet was 27 points.
On the men's side, Anthony Dale scored 24 points to
capture the Men's Outstanding Field Performer Title. Although he didn't
go home with an individual championship, he led his team with top place finishes
in all throwing events including the hammer throw, shot put, javelin, and discuss.
The 2006 Championship resulted in team victories for both
Grambling State squads, making Coach Bertram Lovell the 2006 SWAC Outdoor Track
and Field Coach of the year.
