MISSED OPPORTUNITIES COME BACK TO HAUNT JAGS IN 31-28 LOSS

On a night where it seemed like the Southern Jaguars were destined to be victors, a missed field goal and a botched snap, both in overtime periods, provede to be costly as the Jackson State Tigers kicked a field goal in double overtime to defeat the Southern Jaguars, 31-28.

JSU struck blood first, with a 67-yard TD pass from Jimmy Oliver to Jaymar Johnson to go ahead 7-0.

Southern then scored 14 straight, including tight end Brian Washington's sixth touchdown catch of the season.

A Kendall Addison 54 yard touchdown run and a Lionel Howard fumble return for a score in the third quarter, moved the Jags lead 28-14.

However, JSU dominated the 4th quarter, rattling off 14 unanswered points, two Erik Haw short TD runs, to tie the game at 28, to force overtime.

In the first overtime period, SU's Glenn Bell intercepted a Tiger pass to give the Southern Jaguars the opportunity to win in the first overtime. But kicker, Breck Ackley, the leading scorer in Southern history, pushed the 29 yard field goal wide right, forcing a second overtime period.

After three plays, the Jags set up for a second try at a field goal, but he snap was wide and mishandled as the Jackson State Tigers tackled the holder, Nicholas Benjamin short of the goal line.

After three plays, freshman kicker Eric Perri sealed the win for the Tigers, nailing a 16-yard FG to end the game in front of 40,000 fans.

JSU accumulated 433 offensive yards (209 rushing, 224 passing), while the Jaguars had 339 total yards (131 rushing, 208 passing).
