Final Stats
The Southern Jaguars got big performances from two young quarterbacks,
and the run game that has been missing for the first four games of the season
showed up in huge fashion as Southern also used an opportunistic defense to
route Alabama State 38-20 in front of 15,247 fans at AW Mumford Stadium.
The Jaguars (3-2, 2-1 SWAC) rebounded by taking advantage
of four Alabama State turnovers, which they converted into 21 points and didn't
give the ball away reversing a trend the Jaguars had experienced in the previous
two weeks, with 11 turnovers leading to a two-game losing skid.
CJ Byrd, 6-for-8, threw for a 60 yards and Bryant Lee, 2-for-4,
for 36 yards. Byrd, with 28 rushing yards, ran for a touchdown and Lee, with
66 rushing yards, ran and passed for scores. Lee threw for his first career
touchdown to tight end Brian Washington, a 28-yarder, for a 31-7 lead with 11:29
to play.
The Jaguars had their best rushing output of the season (175
yards), with junior Kendall Addison running for 66 yards and a touchdown.
Defensively, DJ Brooks had a monster night with a career high
15 tackles, to go along with two tackles for loss and one sack. Keidrick Bailey
had 12 tackles. Jarmaul George picked off his third pass of the season in the
first quarter. Cornerback Michael Williams, had a career-high two interceptions,
returning one 82 yards for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter. Williams'
82-yard interception return for a touchdown gave SU a 38-13 lead with 2:30 remaining.
Southern will travel to Huntsville, AL next week to take on
the Bulldogs of Alabama A&M for a 6:30 PM start at Louis Crews Stadium.
