Final Stats
BATON ROUGE -- The Southern Jaguars used a 15-2 run late
in the first half to break open a close game, and cruise to a 72-57 win over
arch-rival Grambling State tonight at the FG Clark Activity Center on the Southern-Baton
rouge campus.
The win moves the Jaguars to 4-9 overall and 3-0 in the SWAC.
This is also SU's first 3-0 SWAC start since the 1999-2000 season when
they started SWAC play 6-0.
Chris Alexander continued his hot shooting, going 9-15 to lead
Southern in scoring for the 13th consecutive game. He finished the night with
23 points, five rebounds and one blocked shot. Peter Cipriano collected his
21st career double-double, with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
Grambling State was led by Brion Rush who scored 23 points
and pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds. Andre Ratliffe was the only other Tiger
in double figures with 11 points.
Southern shot the basketball well on the night, going 25 for
52 for 48%, while holding the G-Men to 30% shooting from the field (20 for 66).
One alarming stat was that the Jags did shoot a horrendous 18 of 32 from the
free throw line (56%).
In a game that went back and forth for the first 13 minutes
of the first half, fans were treated to hot-shooting by Chris Alexander and
thunderous dunks by Peter Cipriano. The game was tied five different times in
the first stanza, with the lead changing six times. SU dominated the fast break
points, winning the battle 10-0.
Southern continued to hit the boards hard, winning the rebounding
battle 43-41. This marks the third straight game the Jags have won the rebounding
edge.
SU will take two days off before hitting the hardwood once
again, this time taking on the Jackson State Tigers at 7:30 pm in hte Mini-Dome.
