PRAIRIE VIEW, TEXAS -- The Southern
Jaguars (2-9, 1-0) used a smothering second half defense and a strong rebounding
performance, along with Chris Alexander's 13 second half points, to erase
a 43-38 halftime deficit in rout to a 73-65 win over Prairie View A&M on
Monday night.
Senior guard Chris Alexander's led SU in scoring for the 10th
consecutive game, finishing the night with a game and season high 27 points.
Alexander hit 9-of-16 from the field, including 3-of-7 from 3-point range. He
also made 6-of-7 free throws. Junior forward Deforrest Riley-Smith had his best
game as a Jaguar, finishing with his first career double-double, 13 points and
a team high 14 rebounds. Senior forward Peter Cipriano added 13 points and 12
rebounds, for his second double-double of the season. Senior center Jerrid Campbell
chipped in 8 points and 10 rebounds.
Oscar Thompson led Prairie View A&M (3-8, 0-1) with 16
points. Anthony Oha and Chris Gaines had 11 each, and Dominique Sharpe added
10.
Southern dominated the boards in the second half, led by Riley-Smith's
10 in the half. They used the rebounding edge for a 20-5 scoring advantage on
2nd chance points, and SU outscored PVAM, 38-22 in the paint.
The win earned coach Rob Spivery his first career SWAC win
since arrivaing on the bluff from Alabama State in the late spring of 2005.
The SU Jaguars take on Texas Southern University at 7:30 pm,
Wednesday night on the Texas Southern campus.
