The Southern Jaguars used a 13-2 second half run to bust
open a tight game and held on down the stretch for a 71-58 win over a scrappy
Jarvis Christian College Bulldog team. The game was an exhibition game for Southern.
Chris Alexander led Southern (0-4) with 20 points. Alvin Mott
scored 17 points and pulled down nine rebounds. Peter Cipriano had eight points
and a team-high 10 rebounds, to go with four assists, two steals and one blocked
shot. Jerrid Campbell had six points and seven rebounds, but was in foul trouble
most of the night.
After shooting a miserable 8 for 26 (30%) in the first half,
the Jags bucked down on defense and that turned into offense, as the Jags were
able to take advantage of their size advantage outscoring the Bulldogs 26-16
in the paint. The Jaguars outrebounded the Bulldogs, 42-28, and SU shot 15 for
23 in the second half (65%), while outscoring Jarvis Christian 8-0 on fast break
points.
In a game that saw the lead change 5 times, Southern took a
minute, 26-24 lead into the locker room at the half. The Jaguars turned up the
defense early in the second half, forcing Jarvis Christian into turnover that
resulted in easy baskets for Southern. Chris Alexander scored seven points,
Alvin Mott a bucket in the Jags run that extended
the lead. Southern's largest lead of the game came at the 2:00 mark, when
SU led by 16 points.
The Southern Jaguars return to action on the hardwood, when
they travel to north Louisiana, to Ruston, to take on the LA Tech Bulldogs,
Saturday, at 7:00 pm, at the Thomas Assembly Center on the campus of Louisiana
Tech University. The game will be televised "Live" on ESPN Regional
Networks and carried by Cox Sports TV, local cable channel 38.
