Alcorn State 38, Southern 16 (Baton Rouge, LA: A.W. Mumford Stadium - 17,341 att.) Tied at 3-3 after one quarter of play, Alcorn State scored 21 points in the second stanza as the Braves picked up a 38-16 road victory over the Southern Jaguars on "Senior Day". Alcorn State rolled up 502 offensive yards (191 rush, 311 pass) in the game while allowing Southern to gain 307 yards (65 rush, 242 pass) on offense.
Southern was led offensively by Steel Adams who had seven catches for 38 yards with 18 carries for 47 yards and a touchdown. QB Joseph Lewis completed 29-of-48 pass attempts for 242 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Gerard Landry caught five passes for 61 yards.
The Jags offense sputtered all day, and Alcorn converted three SU turnovers into 21 points -- including two touchdowns within 13 seconds of the second quarter.
"We weren't focused going into this football game," Richardson said. "I guess that's my fault. Any time the team doesn't play well, you have to look at me. I knew going in, we didn't have a good week of practice.
As bad as the offense was, the defense was not any better. SU's defense has allowed 33.5 points per game in the team's four losses and 7.0 ppg in its two wins.
For Alcorn State, Jeremy McCoy continued his charge on the rushing lead with a 25-carry, 118-yard, one-touchdown effort. QB Tony Hobson finished with 16-of-25 passing, 311 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. Charlie Spiller caught four passes for 143 yards and two touchdowns.
Defensively, Alcorn State was led by Antonio Cooper with 11 total tackles (five solo) and a pass breakup while Brandon Brown had seven tackles. Joemaine Spears had 12 total tackles while David Brooks had 11 stops for Southern.
