BATON ROUGE, La. — Freshman Malachi Simonet was named the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Cross Country Newcomer of the Week following his performance at the Cowboy Stampede, the league announced Monday.

The Lake Charles, Louisiana native turned in the best performance of his young collegiate career while competing close to home, finishing as the second Jaguar across the line in the four-mile race. Simonet posted a personal-best time of 21:58.8, marking a significant improvement as he continues his first season with Southern.

The weekly honor marks the first SWAC award of Simonet's career.
