BATON ROUGE, La. — Southern University will open play in the Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament on Tuesday, facing Bethune-Cookman at the Gulfport Sportsplex.

Southern (32–13, 18–6) enters the tournament as the No. 2 seed from the Western Division and will take on Eastern Division No. 3 seed Bethune-Cookman in the opening round. The two programs last met in the 2022 season, when Bethune-Cookman won their first matchup before Southern responded with a win later in the tournament to eliminate the Wildcats.
 
The Lady Jaguars head into postseason play riding momentum after sweeping Prairie View A&M to secure their seventh consecutive series victory. Southern tallied 22 hits in the series while holding the Panthers to a .253 batting average.
 
Offensively, Asia George and Katiana Maldonado each batted .500 in the series. George added four stolen bases, while Maldonado contributed a double among Southern's six extra-base hits. Abigail Mitchell and Laila Clark recorded four hits apiece, including two doubles each. Mitchell drove in three runs, while Clark added two RBIs and three stolen bases.
 
In the circle, Aaliyah Zabala dominated the first two games, tossing back-to-back complete games while allowing just two earned runs and striking out nine. Chakirrious Parker started the finale, pitching 2.1 innings and allowing only two hits before Jordynn Jennings closed out the game with 4.2 scoreless innings to secure the sweep.
 
As a team, Southern ranks second in the SWAC with a 3.48 ERA and has hit 36 home runs, also second in the conference. Nationally, the Lady Jaguars rank eighth in stolen bases (119) and ninth in triples (20), highlighting their speed and offensive versatility.
