Southern Softball Wins 8-4 at Alcorn State

LORMAN, Ms. --The Southern University softball team got out to an early start Friday, as they defeated Alcorn State 8-4.

Senior Salem Liebenthal (4-2) started and got the win in the circle for the Jaguars (11-16, 7-5). She went five innings, giving up four runs, on 10 hits, allowing three walks and striking out three.

At the plate, the Jaguars were paced by Redshirt sophomore Asia George, who went 1-for-4 on the day with a triple and two RBI's. Freshman Makyia Taylor furnished a standout effort as well, going 1-for-4 and two RBI's.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Jaguars got the scoring started early in the top of the third inning, putting two runs on the board off George triple. Sydney Wesley singled to bring in another run. Taylor sac fly scored another run to put Southern up 4-0. 

SU got two more runners in off passed balls in the fourth to extend the lead to 6-0.

Southern held the Braves scoreless before their offense got in gear the next inning cutting in to the Jaguars advantage 6-2. 

In the top of the 7th inning the Jaguars scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Alainah Felton, bringing the score to 7-4 in favor of Southern. Taylor single drove in another run as the score remained 8-4 for the rest of the game, as the Jaguars clinched the win.

GAME NOTES
» Southern's highest scoring inning was the third, when it pushed four runs across.
» Southern pitchers faced 35 Alcorn State hitters in the game, allowing six ground balls and eight fly balls while striking out five..
» Alcorn State was led offensively by Senior Kristian Edwards, who went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
» K. Parker led the Braves pitching staff, throwing seven innings.

UP NEXT
The Jaguars will be back in action against Alcorn State for a Saturday afternoon doubleheader starting at 1:00 PM.
