Lady Jaguars Stun Lamar, 2-1

BATON ROUGE, LA – Southern used timely hitting and stifling pitching to keep Lamar off balance Wednesday afternoon at Lady Jaguar Field.
 
Southern's 2-1 victory improved the record to 8-25. The loss dropped Lamar to 10-25 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Lamar started the scoring in the top of the first with a home run over the center field wall.
  • Southern would respond in the bottom of the second. Alana Mark would get ahold of one to straight away center that would bounce off the center fielder's glove and over the fence.
  • The Lady Jaguars would add a run in the bottom of the fifth. Jaeslyn Frazier would get things started with a single to left field. Alissa Castaneda would come in to pinch run and advance to second on a single by Keierra Bowman down the left field line. Castaneda would come around to score on a single up the middle by Asia George giving Southern a 2-1 lead.
  • Lamar would threaten in the top of the sixth a with runners on first and second, but a ball hit to the pitcher would ricochet to McKenzie Ogden at second who would throw the runner out trying to score at home.
  • Lamar would threaten again in the seventh with a leadoff double. The runner would steal third and the Cardinals would eventually get another runner on second with just one out. Aylani Ottley would close the game out with a line drive straight to her at third and doubling the runner off.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Southern outhit Lamar 7-5.
  • The Lady Jaguars had one error in the field, while Lamar would finish with none.
  • Southern would leave one runner stranded and Lamar left two on base.
  • Southern drew no walks and struck out seven times.
  • Mark and Frazier would finish 2-for-2 to lead Southern at the plate.
  • Five different Cardinal batters finished with a hit. Hayley Freudenberg would have the home run in the first inning.
 
UP NEXT
The Lady Jaguars series against Texas Southern has moved to April 10-11 due to incoming weather over the weekend. Monday's game will start at 5 p.m. and Tuesday's doubleheader will begin at noon.
