BATON ROUGE, LA – Southern pitching kept the University of Arkansas – Pine Bluff batters off balance in a two-game sweep on Monday morning at Lady Jaguar Field.
Southern won game one by a score of 4-2 and game two 2-1.
Southern improved to 12-27 overall and 8-10 in SWAC play. Arkansas – Pine Bluff dropped to 6-35 and 2-16 in conference play.
GAME 1: Southern 4, UAPB 2

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Arkansas – Pine Bluff got on the board in the second inning after two walks and a double gave them a 1-0 lead.
- Southern would answer in the bottom half with two runs of their own. Anabella Valadez would single to open the frame and Alana Mark would walk right behind her. Blair Willis would sacrifice them over and Jaeslyn Frazier would hit a sacrifice fly to score Valadez. Mark would score on a throwing error on the same play giving the Lady Jaguars a 2-1 lead.
- UAPB would tie things up in the third off a Lady Jaguar error.
- Mark would triple down the right field line to open the bottom of the fourth for Southern. Willis would walk and then steal second to put runners on second and third with no outs. Frazier would hit another sacrifice fly to score Mark. Willis would score on a ground out by Keierra Bowman to give Southern a 4-2 lead.
- Valadez would give up just one hit and one walk over the remaining three innings to shut the door on Pine Bluff.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- UAPB outhit Southern 4-3.
- Both teams committed one error.
- Southern would leave four runners stranded and UAPB left seven on base.
- Southern drew five walks and struck out two times.
- Valadez, Mark and Castaneda each collected a hit on the day. Frazier finished with two RBIs and Bowman had one RBI.
- Ariana Gonzalez went 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead Arkansas – Pine Bluff.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Asia George opened the game with a double to left center and moved over to third with one out, but the Lady Jaguars were not able to bring her home.
- Arkansas – Pine Bluff got on the board for a 1-0 lead after the second inning off a Lady Jaguar error.
- Raquel Latta would get a double in the second but would be stranded there.
- Southern would tie the game in the third when McKenzie Ogden doubled to left field and came home on a single by Valadez. Mark would double in the next at bat, but Valadez and Mark would be stranded on second and third.
- Latta would hit her first career home run to lead off the fourth, giving the Lady Jaguars the decisive run in the 2-1 win.
- Latta would continue to keep the Lady Lions off balance and Chakirrious Parker would come in and retire all six UAPB batters she faced.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Southern outhit UAPB 9-4.
- Southern committed one error while the Lady Lions had zero.
- Southern would leave seven runners stranded and UAPB left three on base.
- Southern drew two walks and struck out three times.
- Ogden would finish 2-for-2 and Latta finished 2-for-3 with the game winning home run.
- Ariana Gonzalez and Samaria Jackson went 2-for-3 to lead Arkansas – Pine Bluff.
