BATON ROUGE, LA – The Southern University's softball team has a midweek doubleheader with the University of Massachusetts Lowell on Wednesday at Lady Jaguar Field starting at 4 p.m.
Southern (3-14) is coming off a 2-1 showing at the Defend the Bluff where they defeated Alabama A&M, 10-9, and Louisiana Christian 4-3.
Opening up the Defend the Bluff against Alabama A&M, the Lady Jaguars found themselves in their first extra inning game, walking off in the bottom of the eighth. They would return the next day for a rematch and fall 12-11 in a tightly contested game. The Lady Jaguars would bounce back against Louisiana Christian in the final game of the tournament.
Southern is led offensively by
Alana Mark,
Anabella Valadez and
Sydney Wesley. Mark has a .326 average with three doubles, two home runs and 13 RBIs. Valadez and Wesley are both batting .300 on the year. Valadez has two doubles, a triple, a home run and two RBIs in 20 at bats. Welsey has a triple and three RBIs.
Mark has reached base safely in 11 straight games.
Asia George is on a five-game hitting streak.
In the circle, Valadez and
Kairah Williams have been the main contributors for Southern.
Raquel Latta has returned to give the Lady Jaguars experience in the circle. Valadez is 0-5 on the season with a 5-85 ERA in 32.1 innings, striking out 18 and walking 15. Williams is 2-5 with a 6.2 ERA in 44 innings this season. She has struck out 32 batters and walked 32. Latta has only pitched in four games this season and is 1-1 on the year. She has a 7.16 ERA in 14.2 innings, striking out 8 and only giving up two walks.
Mark, George and
McKenzie Ogden are the only Southern players to appear in all 17 games this season. Ogden is the only one to start every game.
UMass Lowel takes on Grambling in a double header on Tuesday afternoon and goes into that contest 3-9 on the year. They participated in the Louisiana Tech Tournament where they went 1-3, losing to LA Tech, 10-0, and Houston Christian, 8-5, on Saturday. Sunday, they beat Houston Christian, 4-3, and lost to LA Tech, 8-0.
Offensively, they are led by Morgan Fisher and Mya Case. Fisher has a team high .324 average in 34 at bats and has six RBIs. Case is batting .289 with a team leading four doubles, one home run and seven RBIs.
Ryley Whites leads the River Hawks in the circle with a 1.84 ERA in 26.2 innings. She has struck out 34 batters and walked only five. Kaylie See and Giana LaCedra have also contributed for UMass Lowell. See has a 4.85 ERA in 13 innings, while LaCedra has a 5.25 ERA in 16 innings.
