Williams and Valadez Lead Lady Jaguars Over Jackson State

BATON ROUGE, LA – Anabella Valadez hit a home run and a triple and Kairah Williams scattered five hits and struck out five as the Southern University Lady Jaguars defeated Jackson State 5-3 on the final day of the Mardi Gras Classic at Lady Jaguar Field. Southern improved to 1-8 on the season, while JSU dropped to 3-6.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Williams sent Jackson down in order in the top of the first and the Lady Jaguars opened the scoring in the bottom half. McKenzie Ogden sent a ball over the head of the left fielder for a double. She would steal third and an errant throw by the catcher allowed her to score. Valadez would triple down the right field line and would come in to score on a sacrifice fly by Alana Mark.
  • Southern would score another run in the second after Kameryn Adkins walked and on a single by Sydney Wesley would get to third and score when the right fielder bobbled the ball.
  • The Tigers would threaten in the third after a walk and then an infield single, but Wesley would gun down an attempted steal to end the threat.
  • Jackson would tie it up in top of the fifth with three unearned runs off two Lady Jaguar errors.
  • Alissa Castaneda would get a bunt single in the bottom half and steal second. Valadez would get her second extra base hit, this time she would send it over the left field wall to reclaim the lead 5-3.
  • Williams shut the door on the Tigers in the final two innings, only allowing one runner on base.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Southern out hit Jackson, 6-4.
  • Both teams would commit three errors.
  • Southern would leave five runners on base, while JSU left two.
  • Southern drew three walks and struck out one time.
  • Valadez lead the Lady Jaguars at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs, a home run and a triple.
  • JSU was led by Mari Stephens who went 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored.
 
UP NEXT
Southern will be back in action at the HBCU Classic in Montgomery, Alabama from February 24-26. The Lady Jaguars will take on Alabama A&M on Friday, Florida A&M on Saturday and South Carolina State and Alabama State on Sunday.
