HATTIESBURG, MS – The Southern University's softball team has a midweek matchup against the University of Southern Miss at the Southern Miss Softball Complex in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. The first pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
Southern (0-4) is coming off the National Fastpitch Coaches Association D1 Leadoff Classic. At the NFCA D1 Leadoff Classic, the Lady Jaguars fell to Illinois, Howard, Louisville and St. John's. Sophomore
Alissa Castaneda was named to the All-Tournament team for her outstanding play in the field.
Southern had 10 different players record a hit.
Keira Miracle-Tilford,
Alana Mark and
Kameryn Adkins had multiple hits on the weekend.
Asia George had the lone extra-base hit, a triple against St. John's in the tournament finale.
Julia York had a team high of three RBIs.
In the circle,
Anabella Valadez,
Raquel Latta and
Kairah Williams all got starts on the weekend. Valadez started against Howard and Louisville, combining for a total of 7.2 innings, striking out one and issuing two walks. Latta came in relief during Illinois and started against St. John's. Against St. John's, Latta scattered eight hits in six innings, striking four and walking two. Williams appeared in three games, getting the start in the season opener against Illinois. In those three games, Williams pitched four innings, striking out two and walking seven.
In the field, eight Lady Jaguars had perfect fielding percentages. Castaneda led the way going a perfect 20-fo-20 in opportunities. Mark was not far behind, going 17-for-17.
Southern is 0-11 all time against Southern Miss., dropping both games last season, 3-1 and 7-4. The Golden Eagles comes into the contest at 3-0 after defeating Seton Hall and Samford, twice, at the Back and Gold Invitational.
Southern Miss is led at the plate by Hannah Borden and Natalie Taylor. Borden comes in with a .444 batting average with five RBIs, a double and one home run. Taylor also supports a .444 average at the plate with one double.
In the circle, USM is led by Morgan Leinstock with a 2-0 record and a complete game, including a nine inning outing against Seton Hall. Leinstock has not given up a run in her two games and has struck out 19. The Golden Eagles pitching staff has given up just two runs in the three games.
