DALLAS – The Southern University's bowling team did not let the excitement of the winning the SWAC regular season championship linger into the opening day of the Lady Techsters Classic at USA Bowl in Dallas. Southern (48-36, 20-8) defeated their sixth nationally ranked team and handed head coach Barry Doyle his 100th win at the helm.
 
"We had a great day on the lanes," Doyle said. "I was a little worried that we might have a championship hangover but the ladies came out firing on all cylinders. It has been a few months since we bowled Baker format, but the girls appeared to have no rust. This is a loaded field, we competed well and look forward to doing the same tomorrow."
 
The Lady Jaguars opened the tournament with an 881-766 win over Adelphi.
 
They would look to carry that momentum into the next game against No. 2 Vanderbilt. Unfortunately, the Lady Jaguars would not be able to keep up with the Commodores and would stumble 1,005-843.
 
Tournament host, No. 12 Louisiana Tech would give Southern a chance in the third game, but the Lady Jaguars would come up just short, 989-934.
 
It would only be fitting that coach Doyle would pick up his 100th victory against rival Grambling. The team from up north did not stand a chance against the Lady Jaguars. SU would jump out to an early lead and cruise to a 935-754 win.
 
The last time the Lady Jaguars faced No. 22 Tulane, Southern would use a furious run in the final three games to get their first win against a ranked opponent of the season. This time, the Lady Jaguars would open with an 18 point advantage after game one and not look back, giving them their sixth win against a national ranked team, 940-875.
 
The Lady Jaguars finished 3-2 on the day and are sitting in fifth with a 4,535 for the 25 Baker games, putting them around their season average with a 181.36.

The Lady Techsters Classic continues at 11:15 a.m. tomorrow, February 11. The Lady Jaguars will open against No. 8 Sam Houston and will finish out the Baker portion against St. Anselm. They will bowl the traditional team games against Adelphi, No. 2 Vanderbilt and No. 12 Louisiana Tech. All games are streamed for free on BowlTV.
