D'IBERVILLE, MISS. – The Southern University Lady Jaguars (32-38, 9-10) threw their highest five game set of the season today at the Southwestern Athletic Conference East Roundup at Cypress Lanes in D'Iberville, Miss.
"The ladies bowled their best team scores today in my three years with the program," Head Coach
Barry Doyle said about the teams high scores. "They competed hard all day. They are a young team and just have to learn how to dig in and win the close ones."
The Lady Jaguars came out red hot against Jackson State in the first match of the day. Three bowlers had games over 200 leading to the highest game of the season in a 1,034-891 win. Leading the charge were
Hannah Grather with a 241 followed by
Nyla Wilson, 214, and
Jailyn Rogers, 210.
Alanna Coward and
Kelsey Quinney closed out the score with strong scores, shooting 194 and 175 respectively.
The Lady Jaguars stayed with the same lineup for game two against Texas Southern. Even though the scores were almost identical, TSU was able to pull out the victory 1,104-1,026. Coward was high this game with a 234. Rogers and Wilson shot their second 200 of the day with a 216 and 215. Quinney finished with a 190 while Grather had a 171.
Transition started to take effect for the third game but that didn't slow the Lady Jaguars down much. Prairie View A&M was able to adjust a little quicker and took the game 1,017-951. Coward had another big game, throwing a 244. Grather, 197, Wilson, 191, and Rogers, 185, continued to keep the Lady Jags in the hunt.
The Lady Jaguars were able to get back in the win column in the fourth game against Alabama A&M, 975-842. Coward, Grather, Wilson and Rogers continued to put up big scores. Coward was high with a 214 followed by Grather's 204, Wilson's 202, and Roger's 186.
The Lady Jaguars finished off the high set against Florida A&M. SU kept the game close but didn't get the breaks when needed and fell to the Rattlers 1,024-973. Wilson and Grather tied for the high game with a 204. Coward,
Lindsey Ugas, and Rogers finished out the game strong with 198, 186, and 181.
"If we continue to bowl like this the rest of the weekend, I am sure we will pile up more wins," said Doyle. "I am a proud coach despite the record today."
Southern is currently in a tie for sixth place in the overall SWAC standings with nine games to go. For the tournament, the Lady Jaguars find themselves currently in fourth.
Coward finds herself currently in fifth for the tournament with a 1,084-pin fall for a 216.8 average. Joining her in the top-15 is Wilson, 1,026 – 205.2, in ninth, Grather, 1,017 – 203.4, in 10
th, and Rogers, 978 – 195.6, in 14
th. Rogers is currently in eighth overall with a 185.26 average. Coward, 181, is in 12
th and Grather, 180, is in 14
th.
The Lady Jaguars will look to keep the momentum going tomorrow with five more traditional games. The first game will see SU take on the Hornets of Alabama State. Then the Lady Jaguars will take on rival Grambling before starting the rotation back over with Jackson State.
