MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Southern University bowling team picked up three more wins on Saturday at the ISTAP Hornet Classic in Montgomery, Alabama. The Lady Jaguars find themselves in fourth place heading into bracket play, win three straight matches against the top three schools will give them the tournament victory.
"The team competed much better today on the tough conditions," head coach
Barry Doyle said. "This may be the most difficult patter so far this year.
Jayden Hauck bowled consistent today and made some big shots.
Kelsey Quinney and
Alanna Coward also bowled well. We put ourselves in position to compete for the championship on Sunday."
Opening up the day against the host school, Alabama State University, the Lady Jaguars were looking to move up in the standings. Quinney started out with the front-four strikes, helping her on the way to a 198 game. Hauck and
Jailyn Rogers followed with 187 and 181 games, respectively. The Lady Jaguars would find their mark as a team, defeating ASU, 882-829.
The Lady Jaguars would look to continue that momentum when they took on Alabama A&M University in the second match. Unfortunately, the Lady Jaguars would stumble in a close match, 830-814. Hauck would be high on the team with a 184, while Coward would finish second with a 177.
Looking to turn things around, Grambling State University would be no match for the Lady Jaguars, a dominating 911-672 victory would put SU back in a good position. Hauck would be high again with a 193.
Nyla Wilson (182),
Lindsey Ugas (181) and
Kymberly Jackson (181) would throw games in the 180s. Coward would round out the scoring with a 174.
Florida A&M would be the next team up for the Lady Jaguars. Just like on Friday, Southern would throw under 800 against FAMU but the results were the same, a win for SU, 794-780. Ugas would get on a roll late in the game for a 188. Hauck would continue to put up solid scores, this time a 172.
The Lady Jaguars would continue to fight in the final match of the day against the University of Alabama at Birmingham. However, they would come up short, falling 935-829. Rogers found her mark again, finishing with a 190 to lead Southern in the final game. Hauck would finish the tournament with a 182.
Hauck and Coward would be the only Lady Jaguars to bowl the full five game slate. Hauck would finish with a 918 for a 183.6 average to finish seventh overall. Coward finished at 818 for a 163.6 average for a 22nd place finish.
UP NEXT
Southern will look to move up the final standings on Sunday. They have to beat the top three teams in the standings, first up will be a rematch with Tusculum. Sunday's matches will be the best 4-of-7 Baker matches.
