MONTGOMERY, AL – Southern came away with two wins at the ISTAP Hornet Invitational hosted by Alabama State University on Friday in Montgomery, Alabama.
 
First up on the day was Grambling State University and the Lady Jaguars dominated the match from the beginning. Southern would find themselves up 52 early after a 186-134 game one. GSU would only be able to claim one game in the match and Southern would win 908-722. The other scores in the match were 140-123, 172-138, 195-208 and 215-119.
 
The second match would have the Lady Jaguars take on Florida A&M University. Southern would once again jump out to a big lead, this time taking game one 170-140. FAMU would take the second game, 142-139, but Southern would take the final three to take the match, 139-120, 181-179 and 157-151. The lane transition got to both teams with the final pinfall being 786-732.
 
The University of Alabama at Birmingham would be the next match on the day. This time, Southern would find themselves in a hole after a 193-158 first game. They would claw their way back the next two games, 190-184 and 174-167, but a low fourth game, 143-110, would be too much for the Lady Jaguars to come back from. SU would get the last game, 175-167, but UAB would take the match 854-807.
 
Looking to bounce back, the Lady Jaguars would take on Tusculum. Southern would take a 561-528 advantage after three games, 195-187, 154-184 and 212-157. TU would come back in the final two games, 204-126 and 205-146, giving them a 937-833 win.
 
The final matchup of the day was against Jackson State University. The Lady Jaguars got behind early, dropping the first two games 159-133 and 165-136. They would fight back into the match by taking the next one, 217-170. JSU would respond in the next and extend their lead with a 183-149 game. Southern would close the gap in the final game, 173-159, but that would not be enough as JSU would take the match 848-808.
 
UP NEXT
The ISTAP Hornet Invitational continues Saturday morning with five traditional matches. After the conclusion of the day, the teams will be seeded based on total pinfall and placed in the bracket for the tournament final on Sunday.
