PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Southern University Lady Jaguars (8-5) came into Sunday bracket play in third place but would fall in all three matches to drop to sixth place at the Rattler Classic.

"It was a tough day on the lanes," said head coach Barry Doyle. "Overall a good weekend of bowling for our first tournament."
 
The Southern and Jackson State matches were close the previous two days and this one was no different. The Lady Jaguars would start slow and lose the first game 194-165. They would wake up but would go down 3-0 in the best 4-of-7 match, 189-170 and 214-199. With their backs against the wall, Southern would make their move taking the next two, 190-185 and 183-151. JSU would catch fire in the fifth game on their way to a 242-168 win, giving them a 4-2 match victory.
 
The defending SWAC champions won their first match and were up next for the Lady Jaguars. Southern would do everything they could to defeat the hornets for the second time on the weekend, but the pins did not fall in their favor. The teams would split the first two games, 220-176 in ASU's favor and 231-205 for SU. Alabama State would take the next three games for a 4-1 win, 159-145, 206-185 and 198-157.
 
The Lady Jaguars were looking to finish strong against host Florida A&M. This time the Lady Jaguars came out firing on all cylinders. SU would take the first game in dominating fashion 244-163. FAMU would come back and take the next two games, 176-167 and 22-211. Southern would come back and take games four and five, 202-183 and 180-147, for a 3-2 lead. The Rattlers would take the final two games for the 4-3 win, 171-157 and 184-140.

"There were a lot of positives from the weekend," Doyle said. "We know what we need to improve on. We are looking forward to Tulane next week."
 
UP NEXT
Southern will be back in action next weekend, October 14-16, when they travel to Harahan, Louisiana for the Colonial Lane Classic hosted by No. 17 Tulane.
