Jailyn Rogers Rolls into SWAC Lead

DALLASSouthern University (30-35, 7-7) bounced back in a big way on the final day of the Southwestern Athletic Conference West Roundup to finish 7-7 at USA Bowl in Dallas.

Finishing the day 3-1, the Lady Jaguars put themselves in good position going into the SWAC East Roundup in three weeks to take the regular season crown.

The first game of the day had the Southern take on Alabama A&M. For the second time during the weekend, the Lady Jaguars were able to secure the victory, 811-693. This time around Alanna Coward lead the way with a 176. Jailyn Rogers and Kymberly Jackson were not far behind with a 172 and 171.

Looking for revenge in the next match against Florida A&M, the Lady Jaguars were able to do enough to knock off the Rattlers. Kelsey Quinney led SU with a 178 in the 808-773 victory. Rogers continued to not only be towards the top of the team but also the tournament with her 174.

The third game of the day saw the Lady Jaguars post their lowest score of the tournament in their only loss of the day against Alabama State. Struggling to keep up with the transition, the final was 839-713. Once again Rogers led the team with a 170.

The tournament finale saw Southern throw one of their highest games to dominate Grambling 882-584. Rogers finished out her phenomenal performance with a 220. Coward was next on the team with a 199 while Hannah Grather shot a 179.

After one tournament, Rogers sits atop the SWAC in total pins and average. Her 14-game total of 2,542, 181.57 average, not only puts her in position to win Freshman of the Year but also Bowler of the Year. She is currently 11 pins, .78 average, ahead of Leanna Martinez of Texas Southern for BOY and 4 pins in average over Amani Moore of Prairie View for FOY.

"It was a tough shot this weekend," Head Coach Barry Doyle said about the lane conditions. "Jailyn bowled phenomenal all weekend. I think she is by far the best freshman in the conference but also the best bowler."

Due to Covid-19 protocols and injuries in other programs, the Lady Jaguars' Southern Queens schedule for next week has been canceled. Next up will be the SWAC East Roundup in D'Iberville, Miss. beginning on Friday, February 4.
