Freshman Pace Bowling on Day One

DALLASThe Southern University Jaguar Bowling finished the first day of the Southwestern Athletic Conference West Roundup 3-2 and in a tie for second at USA Bowl in Dallas.

Bowling in a tournament for the first time since before Thanksgiving, the Freshman paced the way for SU to get victories against Jackson State, Prairie View A&M, and Alabama A&M. They came up just short against Texas Southern and Florida A&M.

"The Freshmen definitely held their own today and showed the conference that SU will be tough to deal with." Head Coach Barry Doyle said about the tournament.

The day got started against JSU where SU took the 850-813 victory. Hannah Grather and Nyla Wilson led the way with 201 and 190 respectively.

Texas Southern was up next and the results weren't in the Lady Jaguars favor. This time the comeback came up short in an 876-906. This time Jailyn Rogers led the way with a 203. Wilson and Kelsey Quinney followed with a 193 and 187.

The third match of the day had the Lady Jaguars take on defending SWAC Champions Prairie View A&M. This time things fell the way of SU in an 887-813 victory. This time it was Quinney who paced the Lady Jaguars with a 200. Rogers and Wilson were once again right there to help with a 198 and 187.

Taking that momentum into the next match, Southern was able to defeat Alabama A&M 805-726. Rogers was again the high on the team with a 202. Wilson kept pace with her and finished with a 182.

Looking to finish on a three-match win streak, the Lady Jaguars just couldn't find a way to have the pins fall in their favor. The final match of the day saw FAMU take the win 868-818. The only game of the day not a single Lady Jaguar broke 200 with three bowlers finished in the 170s.

"Overall, the girls bowled well," said Doyle "The pattern is tough and our shot making today was good. After a tough loss to TSU, the girls responded with a big win over the defending champs PV. Fatigue from the holidays definitely was a factor with all the teams and we had a tough loss to FAMU to end the day."

The Freshman trio of Rogers, Wilson, and Quinney all finished in the top 13. Rogers sits at third with a 931 (186.2 avg), Wilson is sixth (916, 183.2) and Quinney is 13th (876, 175.2)
