Gulfport, MS.- The Southern University Jaguars (11-24) defeated the #1 seeded Tigers of Jackson State (15-22) in their first game of the 2021 SWAC Tournament, 4-3, at the Gulfport Sportsplex.
 
Aubrion James earned the win on the rubber after pitching all seven innings. The Jaguars took the quick 2-1 lead over the Tigers in the first inning. The Tigers tied the game in the bottom of the second and took the lead 3-2 after three innings. The Jaguars were forced to respond in a thrilling sixth inning rally. Roxanna Segura flied out to right field in an effort to score Aubrion James and advance Kameri Mott. Hope Kruebee was able to score on a throwing error putting Southern on top, 4-3.
 
Cameron Andrews went 4-4 on the night scoring one run. Lauren Parks, Mariyah Sandoval, Hope Kruebee, Kameri Mott, and Aubrion James each had one hit in the victory. Destiny Hernandez and Roxanna Segura combined for two RBIs to help the Jaguars top the Tigers.

The Jaguars will return to the field on Wednesday, May 12, to take on the Panthers of Prairie View A&M at 2 p.m. The game can be live streamed on the SWAC Digital Network.
