Bowling Finishes Fall Season With 7th Place Finish

Bowling at ISTAP Hornet Classic

Montgomery, AL – Southern University Bowling (23-28) finished up the fall portion of their schedule this weekend at the ISTAP Hornet Classic in Birmingham, AL hosted by Alabama State University.

After finishing up Friday strong, the Lady Jaguars looked to continue that momentum on the final two days. However, that would not be the case this week.

Starting off Saturday against Alabama A&M, the Lady Jaguars were able to take the win 934-782. Junior Alanna Coward and Freshman Hannah Grather led the Lady Jags with a 190 each and Freshman Nyla Wilson wasn't far behind with a 186.

After the first match, Southern couldn't seem to get everyone on the same page as they lost the next three matches. Alabama State, 1,008-842, Emmanuel, 935-882, and Alabama A&M 879-837, all were able to get past the Lady Jags.

In the final match of the day came down to the final bowler for SU. Coward needed a mark and seven count to lock out Tusculum. She came up huge when she spared and struck to give the Lady Jaguars an 849-845 victory.

Individually, the Lady Jaguars were led by Coward who finished 16th with a 179.8 average. Wilson, who was the only other Lady Jag to complete all five games finished with a 169.6. Junior Lindsey Ugas came in for games two, three, and four and finished with a 191 average.

That positioned Southern in seventh going into bracket Sunday where they have been able to move up two spots the previous two tournaments. That was not the case this time around as the Lady Jaguars finished in seventh.

In bracket play, Southern first faced Alabama A&M and had to go the distance winning 4-3. Southern had an opportunity to position themselves in the op five again but 172-170 and 172-171 losses to Jackson State ultimately decided the outcome in a 4-2 loss. The final match was the fourth of the weekend against Alabama A&M. After falling down 2.5-1.5, the Lady Jaguars won the final three games to take the victory 4.5-2.5.
