PENSACOLA, FL – The Southern University Women's Bowling team got the season started finishing 3rd over the weekend at the Rattler Invitational hosted by Florida A&M.
The Lady Jaguars competed in six Baker matches and went 3-2.
In the Baker format, starting members of the competing teams shall successively and, in regular order, bowl one frame on one lane. Once five frames are completed, the team members shall remain on the same lane and complete the starting member order again, with frames six through 10 being completed. No changes shall be made in the order of players after the start of the game, except for substitutes, although once a player has been pulled from the game that player is not allowed to return until the next game.
SU started off the day falling to Alabama State 848-800. "We started out nervous with three freshmen starting" said Coach Doyle about the first day. "Not playing a full season last year even had the upper classmen a little anxious. They settled in and fought hard every match."
After getting the first match jitters out of the way, they then found a grove and was able to get three straight wins against host school Florida A&M, 853-845, Grambling, 821-626, and Jackson State 882-829. In the final match the Lady Jaguars were defeated by Emmanuel College, the only undefeated team in the tournament, 926-793.
The Lady Jaguars started the day in a tie for second in record and fourth in total pins, 4,149 for a 166 average.
Freshman Nyla Willson finished with 925 pins for a 185 average, placing her in 5
th overall and giving her a spot on the all-tournament team. Fellow freshman
Jailyn Rogers finished 7
th with 918 pins and 183.6 average.
SU started the day out slow losing the first three matches to FAMU, Alabama State, and Jackson State. Against FAMU, the Lady Jaguars saw their lowest score of the tournament, falling 869-779. They were able to bounce back in the second game but fell to eventual tournament champion Alabama State 1,014-809. They continued to improve but fell just short, losing to Jackson State by three pins, 874-871.
They were able to finish they day out with two straight wins. They were able to pull of their highest game of the tournament defeating Emmanuel College 940-860. In their final match of the day Southern was able to beat Grambling 894-669.
The second day saw the Lady Jaguars finish with 4,293, 171.72 average, which gave them 8,442, 168.8 average, for the tournament, which was good for third place going into bracket play on Sunday.
Sunday bracket play was the best 4-out-of-7 Baker matches. SU started the day off against Jackson State, they dropped the first game but won the next four to take the match 4-1. The next match had the Lady Jags go against Emmanuel college for an opportunity to make it to the championship match. SU came up short, falling 4-0. The final round had Southern up against Jackson State again for 3
rd and 4
th place. This time the match went to six games but Southern was able to take the win 4-2 to finish in 3
rd place.

The Lady Jaguars look to improve off their first tournament of the season when they travel to Houston for the Kat Klash hosted by Sam Houston next Friday-Sunday November 5-7.
